In continuation of the company's acquisition of GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) spectrum in January 2008, Indian telecom operator Reliance Communications announced on December 30 that in addition to the existing CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) services, the company has launched the GSM services, the Economic Times of India reported.

With a total investment of 100 billion Rupees (US$2.1 billion; US$ = 48.5 Rupees) being spent for the nationwide GSM network expansion, the company's GSM launch covers 14 circles, with the GSM services available initially in 11,000 towns and gradually increasing to 24,000 within next few months. Additionally, the company also plans to invest an additional 20-40 billion Rupees (US$412.4 million- US$825.0 million) in 3G network deployment, according to Reuters, quoting the Chairman of Reliance, Anil Ambani.
